Cmentarz Wojenny w Kełpnie

Łomianki Rolnicza

Description

The current cemetery in Kiełpin was established in the 19th century as the necropolis of the parish community at the church of St. Małgorzata. In 1924 the parish was moved to nearby Łomianki after Kiełpin’s church was destroyed by a flood. Thanks to the efforts of Second World War veterans, in 1979, a quarter was charted at the cemetery to be the resting place for approximately 2500 Polish soldiers and 70 officers from the “Poznań” and “Pomorze” armies fighting during the September campaign (including members of the 6th and 8th Cavalry Riflemen Regiment, the 12th Podolski Uhlan Regiment and the 21st Vistula Uhlan Regiment who were killed during the battle of Łomianki on the 22nd of September 1939). A simple basalt monument is dedicated to their memory; the second one, made of stone, is dedicated to the horsetroopers from the 14th Jazlowiec Uhlan Regiment who were killed during the famous charge at Wólka Węglowa. This monument is ornamented with reliefs of an eagle holding a Virtuti Militari cross in its claws and a charging hussar; On the monument there are also names of towns on attack routes of the regiment between 1918 and 1920 and September 1939. What is interesting, the obelisk is an exact copy of a monument from 1933 located in the yard of the barracks of the Jazlowiec Uhlans in Lwów. Worth attention is also a monument located at the gate, dedicated to the crew of the American bomber B-17G which was shot down on the 18th of September 1944 over Dziekanów. The cemetery is also the resting place of guerrillas from the “Kampinos” group of the Home Army and soldiers from the 2nd Infantry Division of the 1st Polish Army who thrusted Vistula in the Łomianki area during the offensive in January of 1945.
