The beginnings of the “Smile” Cultural Center in Ożarów Mazowiecki date back to May 26, 1977, when the institution was established by the National Council of the Town and Commune of Ożarów Mazowiecki.
The modern statute and the name of the House of Culture “Smile” was obtained on June 10, 2003. According to this document, the center carries out a number of different tasks in the field of upbringing, education and dissemination of culture in order to, inter alia, shaping models of active participation of residents in culture, creating conditions for the development of amateur art movement and integrating the local community. The Community Center was built on the premises of the glassworks established in 1906 in Ożarów by Kazimierz Ansgar Kamiński.
The plant supplied glassware to Warsaw hospitals and pharmacies, and at the factory buildings there was a charity social welfare center run by the director’s wife, Paulina Kamińska. During the Second World War, a Nazi transit camp for civilians was established on the premises of the steelworks, and after the war the factory was nationalized. A memorial plaque next to the entrance to the Cultural Center “Smile” reminds us of the former glassworks.
Currently, the institution organizes a number of initiatives to activate the local community, incl. photography workshops, creative workshops and ballet. Since 2002, the Folk Group “Ożarowiacy” has been active here. On January 1, 2008, a branch of the “Smile” House of Culture was established in Józefów, and on January 1, 2013, a branch in Bronisze was established.
