Dwór Umiastów

Umiastów ul. Umiastowska 43C

Description

A palace-park complex in Umiastów charms with its picturesqueness and elegant simplicity of late-classicistic shape of a mansion constructed around the middle of the 19th century for the contemporary owner – Róża Obrębska. The history of the Umiastów property is much older than of the mansion itself – a long list of landlords of the local grange begins with the name of Adam Pierzchała who lived in the 15th century. In the 16th century the village was owned by the secretary of the two last Jagiellonians – Stanisław Łuszczkiewicz, Pierzchała coat of arms. The abovementioned Róża Obrębska was the wife of the lord of Umiastów – Jan Zakrzewski and after his death in 1831 it was her who took over the management of the property. In the following centuries, the assets changed owners numerous times and were even put on a bailiff auction. In 1861, at the time when the land was owned by Wiktor Czarny Zawisza, McCormick’s horse-drawn reaper was tested here, which constituted quite an attraction for the local populace. In 1878 the property of Umiastów was purchased by a British consul – Francis Cornwallis Maude. At the end of the 19th century it was in the hands of the Groer family and later – Ignacy Rodkiewicz. At the beginning of the 1930s the property was rented by the Milewski family. In the November of 1932 a group of masked, armed attackers assaulted the mansion and robbed the family. After that traumatic experience, the Milewski family sold the mansion to the last pre-war owner – Zdzisław Julian Pawłowski. After the war, in the mansion’s structures which had been taken over by the state operated a primary school and living quarters for its employees (until 1957). From 1946 the management over the property was conducted by the State Gardening Company of Warsaw. In 1960 the mansion was renovated. A noteworthy object in the park is a shrine from the interwar period.
