Description

At the northern edge of the area owned by the Facility for Blind Children in Laski, at the crossing of tourist trails, there is an impressive sandy dune on top of which (100,6 meters above sea level) there is a fire tower and a cross. The latter commemorates priest Władysław Korniłowicz. Beginning in 1918 he performed the role of a spiritual guide for the Franciscan sisters, Servants of the Cross who ran the nearby facility for the blind. In 1930 priest Korniłowicz bought some of the local land and began construction of a retreat house for priests sacrificing his family inheritance for that purpose. In order to honour the priest, the hill was given the name of “the Father’s Hill” – as “father” is what the employees and boarders of the facility in Laski as well as the local populace called priest Korniłowicz. The construction of the retreat house was not finished because of the war breakout, but the priest often stayed there with his charges from the catholic students’ organization “Kółko”. The cross was put on the top of the dune in 1984 on the 100th anniversary of priest Korniłowicz’s birth day. The construction, devastated in the 1990s, was replaced with a new cross in 2006 – on the 60th anniversary of “Father’s” death. Currently the beatification process of priest Korniłowicz is underway. A convenient paved path adapted to the needs of the disabled as well as the blind leads to the top of the hill from the western side.
