Miejsce pamięci Izabelin-Laski

Laski

Description

Place of remembrance dedicated to the Polish soldiers killed in battles of Sieraków and Laski during the September campaign.

A cross painted in Polish national colours, hanging on a tree, decorated with the Polish Eagle and covered with a military helmet commemorates the heroic death of 837 soldiers of the Poznań and Pomorze armies buried at the local military cemetery. Below the Polish Eagle, on the commemorative cross, there is a plaque with an inscriptions. The soldiers were part of the 15th Infantry Division, 25th Infantry Division, Wielkopolska Cavalry Brigade and Podolska Cavalry Brigade and made the ultimate sacrifice while breaking through to Warsaw after the battle of Bzura (it took place between the 9th and 22nd September 1939).

In the vicinity of Sieraków and Laski the units encountered resistance of artillery and tanks of the German 1st Light Division – the Germans suffered severe losses then and after capturing Sieraków on the 19th of September, Polish cavalrymen reached Warsaw. However, the infantry failed to do the same. Bombarded by Luftwaffe planes in Laski and nearby forests, the soldiers were killed in combat against forces of the German 18th Infantry Division.
